From George Washington to Tobias Lear, 30 March 1793

To Tobias Lear

Baltimore March 30th 1793.

Dear Sir,

Late this afternoon, and in company, I r[e]ceived your letter of yesterday’s date. Proposing to set out early in the morning, and the trifling incidents wch happened to occur on the road being related in the enclosed letter, I shall conclude with best wishes for yourself, Mrs Lear and the Child1—and assurances of being Your sincere friend and Affectionate Servant

1. GW was on his way to Mount Vernon when he wrote this letter (JPP, description begins Dorothy Twohig, ed. The Journal of the Proceedings of the President, 1793–1797. Charlottesville, Va., 1981. description ends 107). Although he had planned to travel to Mount Vernon via a circuitous route of canals and roads that would have allowed him to visit a number of towns in Maryland and Pennsylvania, poor road conditions dictated that he instead take a more direct route through Baltimore (GW to Lear, 8 April, to Alexander Hamilton, 12 April, to Thomas Jefferson, 12 April). The enclosure has not been found, but it was probably a letter written by GW to Lear before his receipt of the latter’s letter of 29 March.
