1. French minister Jean-Antoine-Joseph Fauchet’s letter to Randolph of this date thanked him for his attention to Fauchet’s complaint about a failure to return the salute of a French ship at New York Harbor, which, from the materials Randolph had sent, Fauchet was “now persuaded originated in mistake” (DNA: RG 59, Notes from the French Legation).
