Dear Sir
I have waited ‘till the last moment of Colo. Smiths departure in order to have forwarded by him the address and debates thereon, but as the papers are not yet out I write this additional line to inform you that the address which is as usual an echo of the speech was carried by a Majority of about 250 to 90 and that the speeches delivered by the Ministers in both Houses spoke more fully on the necessity of a war with the French than what you will find contained in the Kings Speech. On the following day Pinckney wrote a brief letter to TJ enclosing “newspapers containing the debates in consequence of the Kings speech and a letter for the Comptesse de Caradeux committed to my care by the Portugueze minister and which was omitted to be sent with my last,” as well as some papers he had been requested to send to America by “a Mrs. Hay late of Philadelphia” (RC in DNA: RG 59, DD, endorsed by TJ as received 22 Feb. 1793 and so recorded in SJL; PrC in ScHi: Pinckney Family Papers; Tr in Lb in DNA: RG 59, DD).
