Rufus King to Sarah Livingston Jay

Philadelphia 17 Nov 1794

dear Madam,

Mrs. Ridley has not yet arrived, I will take care that she receives the letter immediately on her coming to Town— I understand that the last dispatches from Mr. Jay are very satisfactory, and that at this date he had expectations of closing his Negotiation in the course of a few Days Weeks.1 With Sincere Esteem I am Dear Madam Your obt. 1RK was JJ’s first choice for secretary, but RK declined, feeling it was his duty to remain in the Senate. RK to JJ, 2 May 1794, JJSP description begins Elizabeth M.
