From John Jay to William Cushing, 9 January 1793

To William Cushing

New York 9 Jany 1793

Dear Sir

I was Yesterday fav[ore]d. with yours of the 6th. Inst:—1 it gives pleasure to learn that your Circuit has been agreable, and that you & Mrs. Cushing have arrived in good Health at Philada.— be pleased to present Mrs. Jays and my best Comp[liment]s. to her. I still feel the Effects of my late Illness, but have much Reason to thank God that I am as well as I am. It is my Intention to be at the Sup. Court in Feby2 The Time that on this occasion must necessarily be absent from home, affords a strong argument in favor of the alterations we have suggested in judicial System—3 I have heard that some Members of Congress doubt the Expediency of adopting our Plan— You will have many opportunities of conversing with them on the Subject, and I flatter myself it will be in your power to remove their objections— I wish to see the Business fully discussed— hitherto but little attention appears to have been paid to it— Yours very affect[ionatel]y,

John Jay

P:S: The Terms of the Sup. Court should certainly be held at Seasons less severe to the Court & Parties than Feby. and Augt.—

The Hon’ble Judge Cushing—
