March 21st 1791

Sir,

I have been this moment honor’d by your favors of the 16th, & 2 of the 17th Instant, & shall proceed immediately to execute your directions.

A Gentleman of Baltimore Town Mr Robert Walsh has applied to me to recommend him to You for an Inspector in Baltimore under the Excise Law1—I Beleive he will execute this office, with diligence & integrity—I have some acquaintance with him, & he is strongly recommended by my Brother—I am, Sir, with sentiments of the greatest respect—Your Most Obt & very Hble Servt

1Robert Walsh (c.1750–1831) emigrated from Ireland and settled in Baltimore, where he established himself as a merchant (Scharf, History of Baltimore City and County, description begins J. Thomas Scharf. History of Baltimore City and County. 1881. New ed., 2 vols. Baltimore, 1971. description ends 2:810). His more prominent son Robert Walsh (1784–1859) was a significant figure in Philadelphia literary society in the early years of the nineteenth century. The elder Walsh received no appointment in the excise service from GW.
