4. Lee had been in Paris several days and planned to remain there no longer than three weeks: Ford, Letters of William Lee, II, 472, 473.
5. His meetings with de Neufville (discussed in Dumas’ letter of Sept. 3). Lee had already told the committee for foreign affairs of his and de Neufville’s draft treaty. He apparently left a copy with the commissioners: Ford, Letters of William Lee, II, 473–7.
