1Washington hoped for one successful stroke against the British before going into winter quarters. Realizing that an attack on New York City would be disastrous, he decided to surprise the posts of the British at Kings Bridge and the northern part of Manhattan Island. What might have been a successful project was abandoned because of the unexpected movement of some British war vessels up the Hudson River. For correspondence concerning this attack, see GW description begins John C. Fitzpatrick, ed., The Writings of George Washington (Washington, 1931–1944). description ends , XX, 351–97.
