Thomas Jefferson to Craven Peyton, 3 April 1813

To Craven Peyton

Monticello Apr. 3. 13.

Dear Sir

As I presume you will go to court tomorrow, and I shall not, I must ask the favor of you to call on me. the perseverance and hostility of Capt Meriwether renders Hornsby’s claim a very serious thing, and he will probably endeavor to engage the other two infant claimants to refuse their confirmation also. I wish to consult you on the best means of treating with those claimants & obtaining their confirmation. affectionately your’s

Th: Jefferson

RC (ViMtvL); addressed: “Mr Craven Peyton Monteagle”; endorsed by Peyton. PoC (MHi); endorsed by TJ.

Albemarle attorney William D. meriwether represented Thomas Hornsby and his wife, Frances Henderson Hornsby, in claiming that her rights, as well as those of the other two infant claimants, Lucy Henderson and Nancy C. Henderson, had been violated by Peyton’s purchase of their patrimony from James L. Henderson, who was not their legally appointed guardian (TJ to Peyton, 12 May 1811; Haggard, “Henderson Heirs,” 16–8).
