15 May 1812, Philadelphia. Solicits JM’s “patronage to the Emporium of Arts & Sciences … not for the pecuniary value of the subscription, but for the honor of [his] name.” “Mr. Jefferson has favoured me with his name,” as have several members of Congress. Requests JM, if he approves, to write his name on the same paper. If JM declines, requests the return of the prospectus. Also asks that Jefferson’s letter be returned.2

1. Joseph Delaplaine (1777–1824) was a Philadelphia publisher. The first issue of his monthly magazine, Emporium of Arts and Sciences ( 25345), which he published with John Redman Coxe, appeared in May 1812. The magazine continued until April 1813 (Van Horne, Papers of Benjamin Henry Latrobe, 3:223 and n. 1).
2. Delaplaine had evidently forwarded JM a 30 Apr. 1812 letter he had received from Jefferson regarding his subscription to the Emporium (DLC: Jefferson Papers).
