Dear Sir

I have recd. your two letters both of the 14th. I know of no objection to your proposed additions to or changes in the list of retained officers, unless it may be in the erasure of B. Peyton.1 If he be the young gentleman who has been employed at or in the neighbourhood of Charlottesville (Va). I have heard him spoken of as […] ⟨m⟩erit, & much esteemed by some whose esteem would be an […]⟨t⟩. I have no personal knowlege of him. You may perhaps have the means of ascertaining the extent of his pretensions, in comparison with others, standing in the way of Majr. Bankhead. Affece. respects

1. Capt. Bernard Peyton (1792–1854) was honorably discharged from the army on 15 June 1815. He went into business in Richmond as a commission merchant, was appointed adjutant general of the Virginia militia in 1825, and served as the city’s postmaster, 1838 –44 (Heitman, Historical Register description begins Francis B. Heitman, Historical Register and Dictionary of the United States Army, from Its Organization, September 29, 1789, to March 2, 1903 (2 vols.; 1903; reprint, Baltimore, 1994). description ends , 1:787; PJM-RS description begins David B. Mattern et al., eds., The Papers of James Madison: Retirement Series (3 vols. to date; Charlottesville, Va., 2009–). description ends 3:624 n. 4). Beginning in 1826, Peyton handled tobacco sales and other Richmond business for JM; their extensive correspondence on these matters may be found in JM’s papers at the Library of Congress.
