James Madison to Thomas Jefferson, 19 March 1809

From James Madison

Washington Mar. 19. 1809

Dear Sir

Altho’ I feel reluctance in trespassing for a moment on the repose to which you have just retired, I can not well avoid enclosing a letter from Mr La Trobe which he wishes may be seen by you before it be decided on, because he thinks you have already acquiesc’d in the reasonableness of its object: and which I wish you to see, because I am so raw on the whole subject, as to need any intimations you may find it convenient to give. You will observe that his proposal includes $700 for past services.

Mr Coles left us this morning. The mail of yesterday brought a letter from Armstrong of Decr 25. & Paris papers of the 27th. No change had taken place in our affairs. The occurrences & prospects in Spain will appear in the Natl Intelligencer. No letter from Short, nor is he named by A. I conclude he had set out for St P.

Health & happiness.

James Madison

RC (DLC: Madison Papers); endorsed by TJ as received 23 Mar. 1809 and so recorded in SJL. Enclosure: Benjamin Henry Latrobe to Madison, 12 Mar. 1809, noting that the pace of work on the public buildings had slackened; proposing accordingly that, instead of filling the vacant post of clerk of the works at its salary of $1,400, he would oversee its duties himself if his son were engaged to assist him as an additional clerk with a salary of $600; noting that the public would save not only the $800 difference between these two salaries but also the $150 cost of renting a separate office; and requesting payment of $700 for the preceding six months during which Latrobe had acted as clerk of the works himself (RC in DLC: Madison Papers; printed in Latrobe, Papers description begins John C. Van Horne and others, eds., The Correspondence and Miscellaneous Papers of Benjamin Henry Latrobe, 1984–88, 3 vols. description ends , 2:703–4).

John Lenthall, the incumbent clerk of the works, died on 19 Sept. 1808 when a vault in the north wing of the Capitol building fell on him (Latrobe, Papers description begins John C. Van Horne and others, eds., The Correspondence and Miscellaneous Papers of Benjamin Henry Latrobe, 1984–88, 3 vols. description ends , 2:661).
