Sir William Jones (1746–94), judge and linguist, was born in London and studied Arabic and Persian at University College, Oxford, where he earned a B.A. in 1768. He entered the Middle Temple to study law in 1770 and was called to the bar in 1774. Jones practiced law in Wales from 1775 until his appointment in 1783 to the Bengal supreme court. He published a variety of works on law and linguistics and numerous translations, including digests of Hindu and Muslim law. Jones died near Calcutta (ODNB description begins H. C. G. Matthew and Brian Harrison, eds., Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, 2004, 60 vols. description ends ).

Jones presumably made his notes some time before his 1783 departure for India.
