Sir,

I take the liberty of making known to you Mr. William Porter a merchant of this place (whose commercial pursuits have caused his residence in Europe for several years past) as a gentleman of respectable character and connections, & in principle an American.1 With the greatest respect your obedient servant,

1JM nominated Porter to be U.S. consul at Palermo in a message dated 10 Jan. 1816, and the Senate approved the appointment two days later (Senate Exec. Proceedings, description begins Journal of the Executive Proceedings of the Senate of the United States of America (3 vols.; Washington, 1828). description ends 3:22–23).
