Sir,

In compliance with the resolution of the House of Representatives of the 31st of December last, requesting such information (not improper to be communicated) as may tend to explain the causes of the failure of the arms of the United States on the Northern frontier1—I have the honor to submit the following documents2 & to offer to you, Sir, the assurance of the very high respect with which I am, Your most obedient & very humble servant

1. The resolution was proposed by William C. Bradley of Vermont and adopted the same day (Annals of Congress, description begins Debates and Proceedings in the Congress of the United States … (42 vols.; Washington, 1834–56). description ends 13th Cong., 2d sess., 818–22).

2. Armstrong enclosed copies and extracts of selected letters from his correspondence with Henry Dearborn, William Henry Harrison, Wade Hampton, James Wilkinson, John P. Boyd, Morgan Lewis, Isaac Shelby, Moses Porter, Winfield Scott, and George McClure regarding the Northern Army’s fall 1813 campaign (414 pp.; printed in ASP, Military Affairs, description begins American State Papers: Documents, Legislative and Executive, of the Congress of the United States … (38 vols.; Washington, 1832–61). description ends 1:439–88).
