§ From John Armstrong. 20 January 1814, War Department. “I have the honor respectfully to propose for your approbation, the inclosed list1 [not found] of appointments for the Army of the United States.”

1. JM placed an asterisk here and wrote below Armstrong’s signature: “Brigadier Izard to be Major General / Brown to be same / Col. McComb to be Brigadier General / Smith to be same.” On 21 Jan. 1814 the president nominated George Izard, Jacob Brown, Alexander Macomb, and Thomas A. Smith for the above-mentioned promotions. The Senate confirmed Izard’s, Macomb’s, and Smith’s appointments on 22 Jan., and Brown’s on 24 Jan. 1814 ( 2:460–63).
