§ From John Armstrong. 20 January 1814, War Department. “I have the honor respectfully to propose for your approbation, the inclosed list1 [not found] of appointments for the Army of the United States.”

RC (DNA: RG 59, ML). 1 p.; in a clerk’s hand, signed by Armstrong.

1JM placed an asterisk here and wrote below Armstrong’s signature: “Brigadier Izard to be Major General / Brown to be same / Col. McComb to be Brigadier General / Smith to be same.” On 21 Jan. 1814 the president nominated George Izard, Jacob Brown, Alexander Macomb, and Thomas A. Smith for the above-mentioned promotions. The Senate confirmed Izard’s, Macomb’s, and Smith’s appointments on 22 Jan., and Brown’s on 24 Jan. 1814 (Senate Exec. Proceedings, description begins Journal of the Executive Proceedings of the Senate of the United States of America (3 vols.; Washington, 1828). description ends 2:460–63).
