In a statement of TJ’s account, John Barnes entered at 18 Sep. a payment to Hanse of $1,000 for the chariot (statement of private account from John Barnes, 30 Sep., in ViU; Barnes to TJ, 21 Sep.). While Barnes was in Philadelphia, he paid the remaining $206 to Hanse on 19 Oct. (statement of private account from Barnes, 4 Nov., in ViU). On the same day, Hanse wrote a receipt of payment in full of $1,206 by John Barnes, with a bill on Walker & Kennedy for $1,000 and a check for $206 by Barnes, “for a Chariot and Harness for four Horses Built for the Honarable Thomas Jefferson Presidant of the United States” (MS in ViU; in Hanse’s hand and signed by him; endorsed by TJ: “Conrad & Hans”; endorsed by Barnes).
