From Thomas Jefferson to the Senate, 5 March 1801

To the Senate

March 5. 1801.

Gentlemen of the Senate

The offices of Secretary of state, Secretary of war, Attorney general of the United States, and Minister plenipotentiary to the republic of France being vacant, I nominate the following persons to them James Madison junr. of Virginia, to be Secretary of State: Henry Dearborn of Massachusets to be Secretary of War:

Levi Lincoln of Massachusets to be Attorney General of the United States:

Robert R. Livingston, of New York to be Minister Plenipotentiary for the United States to the republic of France.

MS (DNA: RG 46, PMEN); entirely in TJ’s hand, with date emended from “4” to “5” Mch. by TJ; endorsed. PrC (DLC).

 

I nominate: Jacob Wagner carried TJ’s first executive message on nominations to the Senate on 5 Mch. The Senate immediately consented to the appointments and, upon finding that the president had no other communications for them, adjourned (JEP description begins Journal of the Executive Proceedings of the Senate of the United States… to the Termination of the Nineteenth Congress, Washington, D.C., 1828, 3 vols. description ends , 1:395–6).
