To James Madison from Jacob Wagner, [ca. June 1806]

From Jacob Wagner

[ca. June 1806]

Dr. Sir

Views of improving my circumstances having led me to the purpose of retiring from Washington by the first of next October, it is due both to propriety and to my sentiments towards you, to apprise you thus early of my intention. I have the honor to be, Dr. Sir, with great respect, Your most obed. servt.

Jacob Wagner

RC (DLC). Docketed by JM. Undated; dated 1806 in the Index to the James Madison Papers. Conjectural date assigned here based on Louisa Catherine Adams to John Quincy Adams, 9 June 1806, which reports of Wagner: “it is said he has just resigned” (MHi: Adams Papers [microfilm ed.], reel 138).
