§ From Tobias Lear. 4 November 1805, Leghorn. “I have this day drawn on you, three setts of exchange, as follows

$25657.89 say for twenty five thousand six

hundred and fifty Seven Dollars, and eighty nine Cents being for value, received on account, of the Department of State of the U.S. for the Service of the Barbary affairs, which please to honour accordingly.”

1A letterbook copy (owned by Stephen Decatur, Garden City, N.Y., 1961; 1 p.) of the first bill of exchange reads: “Thirty days after sight please to pay this my Seventh of Exchange (first, second, third, fourth, Fifth & Sixth not paid) to the Order of Messrs Degen, Purviance & Co. Sixteen thousand seven hundred and seventy Six dollars, thirty one Cents, Value received on account of the United States of America, for the Barbary service, and place the same, with or without advice.” Two added notes read: “One Sett of the same tenor and date for four thousand nine hundred and thirty four dollars, twenty two Cents,” and “One Sett of the same tenor and date for three thousand nine hundred and forty seven dollars & thirty six Cents.”

2The RC of the third bill of exchange (NHi: 1 p.; marked “Fifth”; in a clerk’s hand, signed by Lear; endorsed on the verso on 4 Nov. 1805 by Degen, Purviance & Company to Philip and Anthony Filicchy & Co., and on 8 Nov. 1805 by the latter firm to Frederick and Philip Rhinlander) reads: “Thirty days after sight please to pay this my Fifth of Exchange (First, Second, Third Fourth Sixth & Seventh not paid) to the Order of Messrs Degen Purviance & Co. Three Thousand nine Hundred Forty Seven Dollars & Thirty six Cents, Value received on Account of the United States of America for the Barbary service & place the same with or without advice.”
