1. The enclosed extract from Revolutionary War veteran Col. John Allan’s letter to Gallatin, dated 3 Nov. 1804 at Eastport, reads: “I have a letter from Capt. Oliver Shead Post masr. on Moose Island informing me, that he had through a correct & respectable conveyance (which he circumstantially states) received intelligence that an order had been received from London by a dignified character in the Province of New Brunswick, That a survey be immediately made of Moose & other Islands adjacent—To have accurately ascertained the number of families and improvements, & to know if the conditions of settlements were fulfilled. Although I make no doubt of its authenticity, yet the Statement is not accompanied with those vouchers, that I presume are necessary to transmit it for official notice. In consequence have wrote desiring one to be made out with suitable documents properly authenticated. I take the liberty to mention this as you are in some degree acquainted with my sentiments & feelings on the subject, which we have spoke of, when together, or communications by writing. My fears & apprehensions remain still the same.”
