Enclosed is your Accot with W.H. & Co. Amot £34.19.5 also an accot of what will be due to the Potowmack Co. the 15th next Mo. say £33.14.8 Virga Currency1—If agreeable to you I will take your draft on London payable at 30 days sight for either, or both these accounts, at the Excha. of 40 ⅌ct.2 I am very Respectfully Yours

1. The enclosed accounts show charges by Hartshorne on 27 Nov. 1787 of £23.17 for red clover seed and, on 4 Jan. 1788, £5.16.2 for seventeen bars of iron, and £5.6.3 for one barrel of sugar, making a total of £34.19.5 in Virginia currency. The Potowmack Company charges were £6.10 sterling for each of the five shares that GW held, but deducting £9.12 Virginia currency for the expenses GW had incurred on company business in 1787 leaves a total of £33.14.8 Virginia currency owed by GW to the company.

2. On 17 Mar. GW wrote from Mount Vernon to Wakelin Welch & Son: “Gentn Of this date, and at thirty days sight I have drawn upon you in favor of Wm Hartshorn Esqr. for Sixty Seven pounds Sterling which please to pay, and place to the Acct of Your Most Obedt Hble Servant Go. Washington” (LB, DLC:GW). The payment of £67 sterling comes to £93.16.2 in Virginia currency, and Hartshorne’s account (note 1) shows only £68.14.1 due from GW, but in March, after sending the account, Hartshorne had supplied GW with iron valued at £25.6.1 (Ledger B description begins General Ledger B, 1772–1793. Library of Congress, George Washington Papers, Series 5, Financial Papers. description ends , 258).
