To John Jay from Lafayette, 15 October [1787] (private)

From Lafayette (private)

Paris October the 15th. [1787]

My dear Sir

I Have Been just Now writing an official letter to You1 which Count de Moustier2 will take With Him, and while He Carries Introductory letters to You, I Shall only add that I think His temper, and His Mind Will insure to Him the Esteem of the public, and Your Particular Regard. His Sister in law, the Countess de Brehan,3 Goes out With Him, and is Very desirous to Be Acquainted With Mrs jay. I Have presumed, My dear Sir, to offer My opinions on politics and I wish they May obtain Your approbation—I Say Nothing Upon trade, as Mr jefferson Has writen, and We Expect to write Again By the November Packet—I think it a Great Happiness for America to Have Such a Man as Mr. Jefferson to Represent Her. Mde. de Lafayette is in Auvergne, where I Shall Soon Meet Her, And Attend the provincial Assembly—You See, My dear friend, that We are Making a Progress. There Goes in the Packet a Son to Mr dupont,4 whom You May Have Seen in Paris when He Has Acted a Part Under His friend Mr Turgot, and other Ministers of finance. The father is a very Sensible and Honest Man—The Young Gentleman Announces a Good disposition, and I beg leave to introduce Him to You. Adieu, My dear Sir, Present My Affectionate Respects to Mrs jay, with tender Regard and Attachment I Have the Honour to Be Yours,

Lafayette
