D, ViLxW: Washington’s Account Book. After Daniel Parke Custis’s death in 1757, three court-appointed appraisers in each of the six counties where Custis had owned land took inventory in 1757 and 1758 of Custis’s personal property. As GW’s heading of the Combined County Inventory indicates, the appraisers returned their inventories and appraisals to the New Kent County court, not to the General Court as the law allowed (see Editorial Note, 20 April 1759–5 Nov. 1761). Presumably it was John Mercer as attorney who initially made, or had made, the combined county inventory from the separate county inventories deposited at the New Kent County court. Mercer based the accounts in schedules A, B, and C (docs. III-A, III-B, III-C–1, III-C–2, and III-C–3) on the county inventories, and he undoubtedly attached a copy of the combined county inventory to the schedules when he submitted the documents to the court-appointed commissioners for their initial division of the estate in the fall of 1759 (see Editorial Note). GW copied in his account book the combined county inventory giving the appraisers’ listing in each county of Custis’s slaves and other personal property with the appraised value of the person or items in each entry. GW’s copy seems to be the only one to have survived. Unfortunately, a part of each page is so water stained as to be illegible, but since docs. III-A–2, III-A–3, III-A–4, and III-A–5, as well as Appendix E, are not simply based upon but are derived wholly or in part from the Combined County Inventory it has been possible to provide in square brackets the gist of much of the illegible material. Most of the insertions in square brackets are taken from the documents that are directly derived from this inventory and therefore are in a sense suppositious readings of the original.

To save space, we have not used GW’s tubular form in listing the slaves. A semicolon is used to separate entries, and the figure following the name is the appraised value of the slave, in pounds unless otherwise noted. In GW’s table each slave is identified as a Negro.

See Appendix E, entry 30.

The actual total for the figures printed here is £782, £50 less than the given total.

If the amounts for the appraisals of the other items in entries for King William County (nos. 138 through 152) and GW’s total for the county (£1,219.11.6) are correct, the appraised value for the 40 calves was £26.12.

There seems to have been no item 175 in the combined county inventory, but see Appendix E, entry 19.

See Appendix E, entry 31.

The running total through item 180 is £96.10; the running total through item 198 given in GW’s copy is £171.12.6 while the total for the figures given here is £170.15.6, a discrepancy of 17 shillings.

According to entry 15 in John Mercer’s consolidated inventory (Appendix E), entry 267, missing in the combined county inventory, was “3 narrow” axes valued at 12 shillings.

GW wrote 367.11.6 instead of the correct total, 387.11.6.

The manuscript is torn where the totals are given. The figures in square brackets are taken from or computed from the running totals in the inventory.
