I now enclose you a Copy of the Grant you wrote for. The Inquisition cannot be found. I have directed the Clerk to continue his search, and if he should succeed, a Copy shall be immediately forwarded, if you can give a more particular description of it, from any papers in your possession, it may assist in the discovery.1 with love to my Aunt I am my dear Uncle Most Sincerely Yr Affect. 1. On 9 Oct. GW wrote to Bushrod Washington about Thomas Pearson’s suit to recover land that his brother Simon had sold in 1763 to GW and two others. In his letter GW posed a number of questions about the suit and also asked Bushrod to get “certified copies, from the Records in Richmond, of the Papers mentioned in the enclosed.” When Bushrod wrote GW on 20 Oct. to answer the queries, he reported that the copies of the documents that GW requested were “not yet finished” and would “be sent by the next post.” Bushrod here indicated that one of the copies asked for by GW was that of “the Inquisition.” In his letter of 13 Nov., Bushrod makes clear that the inquisition was the document supposed to be filed with the court by the panel who evaluated Simon Pearson’s property when the entail was docked and the land was sold.
