Sir

I have the honor to inclose for your information the copy of a letter from Captn: Stille1 Commanding Officer at West point with a copy of my answer to it.2 Inclosed also is a letter from mr Wheeler3 formerly 1st. Lieutt: in the 12 Regt: U S. to mr P Church, soliciting his interest, for my recommendation to procure him an appointment in the Artillery which I shall with pleasure give, since the abilities of that Gentleman, as well as his Character, have been highly spoken of to me.

PS. I have sent Major Hoops4 to West point to obviate any difficulties which may occur in this affair, and should, upon reflexion any new steps appear necessary to be adopted, I will advise Major Hoops to take them.

3Elnathan (Elhanon, Elhanar, Elharon) W. Wheeler, a resident of Poughkeepsie, New York, was appointed a lieutenant in the Twelfth Regiment of Infantry on January 14, 1799 (Executive Journal, I description begins Journal of the Executive Proceedings of the Senate (Washington, 1828), I. description ends , 300, 305, 306), and on June 14, 1800, was honorably discharged in accordance with Section 2 of “An Act supplementary to the act to suspend part of an act, intituled ‘An act to augment the Army of the United States, and for other purposes’” (2 Stat. description begins The Public Statutes at Large of the United States of America, II (Boston, 1850). description ends 85–86 [May 14, 1800]).
