From William Smith to Abigail Smith Adams, 25 June 1798

Boston. 25th. June. 1798.

Dear Madam.—

Your favor of the 19th. Ins. I have received by post. T. Welsh can have his Degree at Cambridge at any time before Commencement, if you think it necessary for him to go before you return I will look out for a passage for him and fix him off.–The Answer to the Address from the Students at Cambridge was recd. & published in one or more of our papers. (It is in the Mercury 5 June.) I think it a fortunate circumstance<s> that Mr Bache has published Talyrands Letters. It has led to enquirys which will be of essential service in exposing the connection between a party in this Country & the Agents of the French Directory. The Act of Congress to suspend all intercourse with France will ruin the speculations of the Agents of France. See & a number of theirs lately arriv’d, have bro’t out their Pockets fill’d with passes. for Ships and Cargoes to be dispos’d of among their good Friends, <in this Country> & to such, as they can purchase, to increase their influence in this Country—Happily this plan of the cunning Minister, is counteracted.—

The Dr remains in the same situation, as some, weeks past, I pity his Family, as his confinement will be the means of loosing most of his business—You will see by the papers that we have chosen for Senator the Man you approve, if Mr Ames had consented the go I think he wou’d have been chosen nearly Una.—It will now rest with the Faederal Gov. to put Harbour in a good state of defence. Our Militia will be very respectable. A great number of New Com. are forming both Horse & Foot.—

Mrs. Smith and our Children are well, she joins me in Affec. Regards to you & the President. [. . .] This Town the last week has met with [. . .] public Loss in the Revd. Dr Belknap. Two of [. . .] brightest ornaments of Learning & Religion have been suddenly taken away. in a few Months—

Wm Smith.
