Washington Feb. 12. 1801. 7. A.M.

Th:J. to P. N. Nicholas.

The H. of R. has been in conclave ever since 2. aclock yesterday. 25. balots have been taken at intervals of from half an hour to an hour. they were invariably 8. 6. & 2. divided. I can venture nothing mo[re by] the post but my affectionate salutations.

PrC (DLC); faint, text in brackets supplied from Documents ii–v; in ink at foot of text TJ wrote the names of Mann Page, John Page, James Monroe, Nicholas, John Wayles Eppes, Thomas Mann Randolph, Col. Nicholas Lewis, Peter Carr, William Bache, James Madison, and Archibald Stuart; he used a brace to connect that list to a notation also in his hand: “with a copy of Payne’s Compact Maritime”; he also entered those names in SJL as letters sent on this day, again setting the group off with a brace and adding the note about the enclosure.
