1. On May 9, 1799, Rufus Putnam wrote to Wolcott: “Your favor of the 19th ultimo came to hand last evening. The time proposed by Major [Israel] Ludlow to commence the survey of the Indian boundary was the first of June, as expressed in my Letter to you of the 15th of March: but as the Letter from the Secretary at War to Governor [Arthur] St Clair, which came under cover to me, could not reach Cincinnati untill after the 20th of April I doubted the practicability of collecting the Indians by the first of June, therefore in my letter to Governor St Clair of the 11th of April I informed him that Major Ludlow was instructed to wate on him respecting the business & prepare himself to commence the survey at any time the Governor Should agree to have the Indians notified to attend; it is not therefore in my power to fix upon the day when the Indians will be convened and the Surveys commence, but the Troops destined for that Servis ought to be drawn as Soon as may be to the Fort or Station near where Commences the portage from Lorimies Creek to St Mary’s river & be there held in readiness; it being the nearest post or Station to the point of opperation of the commencing of the Survey” (ALS, RG 49, Records of the Bureau of Land Management, General Land Office, Letters Received from the Surveyor General, Vol. I, National Archives; copy, Hamilton Papers, Library of Congress; LC, RG 49, Records of the Bureau of Land Management, General Land Office, Letters Received from the Surveyor General, Vol. I, National Archives).

2. On the verso H wrote: “Rect. acknowledged. The order desired has been given to Colonel [John F.] Hamtramck as temporary Commander in the presumed absence of General [James] Wilkinson who has been ordered to the Seat of Government.” See H to Hamtramck, May 12, 1799.
