1. Hambly first wrote GW from Falmouth, England, on 17 Feb. 1797: “Some time since I did myself the pleasure to wait on you through the Medium of my friends Messrs Thompson & Veitch, with the present of an old Cheshire Cheese. The gracious manner in which you was pleased to receive it—and the growing respect I feel for your Character—influences me to supplicate your Condescension, to receive another at my hands—which I hope you will be pleased to do” (DLC:GW).

On 30 July 1798 Thompson & Veitch of Alexandria wrote GW: “We are favoured with yours of the 20th Instant and have forwarded the Hams ⅌ Ship Suffolk (that sailed this day) to the care of our friends Miller & Mandale of London who will be careful to have them deliverd to Mr Hambly. We with pleasure accept your friendly invitation to a family dinner, and shall soon make it convenient to do ourselves the Honour of waiting on you at mount Vernon” (DLC:GW). Hambly wrote GW on 13 April 1799 to thank him for his “Present of Hams which unfortunately went into the Hands of Victor Hughes [Hugues], or some of his Fraternity” and to say that he was sending GW another Cheshire cheese. When writing Hambly on 1 Sept. 1799 thanking him for the cheese, GW said that he was “making another trial—through the medium of Messrs Thompson & Veitch” to send him Virginia hams. GW’s letter to Thompson & Veitch has not been found.
