The letter-book copy is addressed to Cooke and is followed by a note reading “A Letter in the same Words was written to Governor Trumbull of Connecticut.” Trumbull’s letter book at the Connecticut State Library includes a copy of a letter from GW of this date, but its wording is that of GW’s letter to Nathaniel Woodhull of this date. The member of GW’s staff who prepared the final copies of the letters to Trumbull and Woodhull apparently interchanged the addresses by mistake. See GW to Woodhull, this date, source note.
