To Major General Stirling

Hd Qrs West-point 13 Sepr 1779.

My Lord

G.W.

Df, in James McHenry’s writing, DLC:GW; Varick transcript, DLC:GW. A purported LS was offered for sale by American Art Association, 11–12 March 1936, item no. 543.

2On this date, GW wrote to Lt. Col. William Washington from headquarters at West Point: “You will be pleased immediately on receipt of this to call in the party which was intended to escort Mr Gerard, who I am informed has altered his intention of coming this way, leaving that one designed for Mr La Luzerne where it was stationed, and obey such orders as you may receive from Major General Lord Stirling” (Df, in James McHenry’s writing, DLC:GW; Varick transcript, DLC:GW). For GW’s earlier orders to Washington, see GW to Washington, 7 Sept.; see also Richard Kidder Meade to Washington, 5 Sept., quoted in the source note to GW to Ezekiel Belden, 5 September.
