Some circumstances having made it necessary to station Major Lee’s corps at Monmouth,1 your Lordship will have his post at Paramus occupied by Lt Col. Washington—Inclosed is a letter directing him to take your orders on this occasion.2 I am my Lord Your Lordships

2. On this date, GW wrote to Lt. Col. William Washington from headquarters at West Point: “You will be pleased immediately on receipt of this to call in the party which was intended to escort Mr Gerard, who I am informed has altered his intention of coming this way, leaving that one designed for Mr La Luzerne where it was stationed, and obey such orders as you may receive from Major General Lord Stirling” (Df, in James McHenry’s writing, DLC:GW; Varick transcript, DLC:GW).
