1This letter has not been identified. Richard Campbell (d. 1781), who was appointed a captain in the 8th Virginia Regiment in February 1776, had been promoted to major by April 1777 when he marched a detachment from his regiment to Middlebrook, New Jersey. He returned to Virginia in late June 1777 to oversee the recruitment of the 8th Virginia (see Campbell to GW, 24 July 1777). Campbell was promoted to lieutenant colonel on 20 Feb. 1778 and served in various Virginia regiments before being killed at Eutaw Springs in September 1781.
