1The entry under this date in Jefferson’s Summary Journal of Public Letters (DLC: Jefferson Papers) reads: “G.W. to Th: J. on the proposal to increase rapidity of Post office.”

2For the secretary of state’s suggestions for expediting the postal service, see Thomas Jefferson’s Memorandum of Conversations with Washington, 1 Mar. 1792, n.1.
