1. GW probably was referring to William Weston, an English engineer who had contracted in 1792 to serve as engineer for the canal being constructed in Pennsylvania by the Schuylkill & Susquehanna Navigation Company. GW hoped to have him examine the Potomac River canal. Before his return to England in 1800, Weston became involved with a number of important engineering projects, including plans for a water system for New York City and a bridge over the Schuylkill River at Philadelphia. He had married Charlotte Whitehouse, daughter of an English brewer, in 1792.
