1. At this time, Robert Townsend Hooe of Charles County, Md., was a partner in the firm of Jenifer & Hooe, later Hooe & Harrison, of Alexandria. In the 1780s GW had frequent dealings with the company and with Hooe himself, who became a member of the Fairfax County court and the Fairfax Parish vestry.

4. GW’s neighbor Thomas Triplett was at Mount Vernon on 4 October. On that day GW wrote in his Cash Memoranda, 1772-75 description begins “Pocket-day-Book or Cash-Memorandums,” 9 Aug. 1772–27 May 1773, 29 May 1773–22 March 1774, 26 Oct. 1774–3 May 1775. Manuscript in Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens, San Marino, Calif. description ends : “Charge Mr Thos Triplett with Cash advancd, on acct of his & Mrs French’s Wheat 60 at 5/ payable in April.”

5. On 8 Feb. 1773 GW signed a one-year agreement with Caleb Stone, of Prince William County, as “overlooker” of his slave carpenters. Stone was to receive £40 Virginia currency in addition to his “washing, Lodging, & Diet—also with Pasturage for a Horse.” His duties were “to work duely & truly with them [the slave carpenters] himself, wherever the said Washington’s business may require and will moreover to the best of his knowledge and skill, instruct all, and every of the said Negroes which may be put under in the Art and Mistery of the Trade of a Carpenter (or Cowper if they should at any time be employed in this business)” (ADS, in GW’s hand, DLC:GW). GW’s ledger shows payment to Stone totaling £44.16.3 beginning 9 Oct. 1773 and ending 23 Dec. 1776, for “work done for me” (General Ledger B description begins General Ledger B, 1772–1793. 7. GW paid John Hagan of Fairfax County £9 in goods and services as well as cash for “makg & Burning 60,000 Bricks” (General Ledger B description begins General Ledger B, 1772–1793.
