To Captain Robert Stewart, at Winchester.
You are hereby required to take charge of the Recruits sent to Winchester by Captain Gist,1 whose Son you must order to proceed immediately and join his Father.2
Captain Gist this day received one hundred pounds to recruit with; and the same Orders that were given to the other Officers on the 3d instant. &c.

1. Adam Stephen wrote GW on 3 Dec. that 19 of Gist’s recruits had come to Winchester.
2. Nathaniel Gist (1733–1789), the son of Capt. Christopher Gist, accompanied his father on Braddock’s expedition. He became a lieutenant in his father’s company of scouts in the Virginia Regiment on 28 Dec. 1755, serving in the regiment until 1762 when the regiment was finally disbanded. The younger Gist later acted as deputy to the superintendent of Indian affairs. During the American Revolution he was a member of the Virginia militia, and GW made him a colonel of one of the additional continental regiments in 1777. After the war he moved to Kentucky.
