§ From Robert Smith

28 April 1804, Navy Department. “I have the honor to enclose an estimate of the value of the articles comprehended in the ‘invoice given to the Consul of the United States at Algiers—to be furnished by the United States on account of the annuity which will be due on the 5h seper 1804.’”1

1The enclosed invoice (2 pp.) lists the articles given to Lear as gunpowder, rope yarns, cables and cordage of various thicknesses, hawsers, tar and pitch, tar brushes, painters, sheet lead, lignum vitae, and pine planking. The total cost, including freight charges, amounts to $120,633.60.
