§ From Robert Smith

4 February 1811, Department of State. Forwards copies of the latest census and militia returns from the Orleans Territory in compliance with a Senate resolution of 1 Feb. 1811.1

RC and enclosures (DNA: RG 46, TP, Orleans); letterbook copy (DNA: RG 59, DL). RC 1 p. In a clerk’s hand, signed by Smith. Enclosures are copies of the census return for the Orleans Territory, 31 Dec. 1806 (1 p.), and the militia return for the Orleans Territory, 30 June 1810 (1 p.). Printed in Carter, Territorial Papers, Orleans, 9:886–87, 923–24. JM forwarded the RC and enclosures to the Senate on 5 Feb. 1811.

1On 1 Feb. 1811 the Senate had passed a resolution proposed by James A. Bayard of Delaware requesting the president to forward copies of the latest census and militia returns from Orleans Territory (Annals of Congress description begins Debates and Proceedings in the Congress of the United States … (42 vols.; Washington, 1834–56). description ends , 11th Cong., 3d sess., 114).
