Washington City February 24th 1822

Sir

You must know that me the Undersigned election for you in year 1800 on my own expencee I went to Annopolis and published a card that broaght out Judge Düwald to write those essays which was the opinion of Mr Leiper of Philadelphia put you in as President of the U States

You must know I am now in distress and am under the necessity of asking of you for a Dollars you will see that I have done a great deal of good—I am know by Mr [. . .] or [. . .] [King?] who are Clerks in the department will you befriend me with a few Dollars by the retarn of Mail

I had hopes I should have never have occassion to call on you but so it is ordered

RC (DLC: TJ Papers, 221:39561); two names illegible; addressed: “Thomas Jefferson Esq. Motecello Va Chorlottsville C house Virgininia”; franked; postmarked Washington, 25 Feb.; mistakenly endorsed by TJ as a letter of 27 Feb. 1822 received the next day and so recorded (with additional bracketed notation: “drunk”) in SJL.

Gabriel Duvall (judge düwald) published six installments of a lengthy essay in support of TJ’s presidential election in the Annapolis Maryland Gazette between 26 June and 2 Oct. 1800.
