To Thomas Jefferson from William Short, 14 December 1802

From William Short

14. [Dec. 1802]

Jefferson—mention that of Minor—& to let me know if he hears from Lilly—desire to convert my land into money or ground rent at Alexia.—Barton—Bartram

FC (DLC: Short Papers); partially dated; entirely in Short’s hand, consisting of an entry in his epistolary record. Recorded in SJL as received from Philadelphia on 17 Dec.

Earlier in the year, TJ had engaged John minor of Fredericksburg as an attorney to represent Short’s interest in the government’s suit against Edmund Randolph. Minor wrote Short early in December, noting that his services were no longer needed in consequence of the decision by Madison and Gallatin to pay Short’s claim for back salary without waiting for the outcome of the suit (Minor to Short, 1 Dec., in DLC: Short Papers; Short to Minor, 13 Dec., entry in epistolary record, same; Vol. 37:50–1, 81–2; TJ to Gallatin, TJ to Short, and Gallatin to TJ, all 9 Oct.; TJ to Short, 18 Oct.).

Gabriel lilly managed Short’s land in Albemarle County (Vol. 37:472).

alexia: Alexandria.
