Adams Papers

From Benjamin Rush to Abigail Smith Adams, 27 October 1800

Philada: October 27th. 1800.

My dear Madam

Your letter afforded me, and my distressed family great Consolation. It was much encreased by the friendly manner in which my dear and venerable friend Mr Adams received me last evening. The sentiments expressed (unfortunately to Mr Coxe) were Often you know communicated to Mr Adams in our free Conversations and letters upon titles, and forms and Government eight, or ten years ago. Indeed similar strictures upon his publications came from New England at the same time & from persons who are now his sincere and active friends. “We are fallen in evil times, evil times indeed.”—

My dear Mrs: Rush joins in the most affectionate regard And gratitude / with my Dr madam / your / Sincere / friend
