To George Washington from Edmund Randolph, 26 March 1794

From Edmund Randolph

[Philadelphia] March 26. 1794.

The Secretary of State has the honor of returning to the President Govr. Clinton’s letter &c. It was the opinion, that the Speech of Ld Dorchester, tho’ important, is sufficiently promulgated in the Newspaper.1

The gentlemen have agreed to the letter to the governor of Kentucky, without any amendment.2

They have suggested an amendment to the third paragraph of the proposed message; which will be corrected, to be laid before you tomorrow.3

AL, DNA: RG 59, Miscellaneous Letters; LB, DNA: RG 59, GW’s Correspondence with His Secretaries of State.

1For the speech given by Lord Dorchester (Guy Carleton) on 10 Feb., see n.2 of George Clinton’s letter to GW of 20 March. Randolph and other members of the cabinet apparently did not see the need to submit a copy of this speech to Congress because of its widespread publication in the newspapers. For a publication of this speech, see the 26 March issue of the Gazette of the United States (Philadelphia).

2For the letter from Randolph to Isaac Shelby of 29 March, see n.5 of Randolph to GW, 19 March (first letter).

3For the proposed message, see Randolph to GW, 27 March (second letter).
