To John Jay from Gouverneur Morris, 21 May 1782

From Gouverneur Morris

Philadelphia 21st. May 1782

Dr Jay

I write these Lines to acknowlege yours from St. Ildefonso of the twenty eighth of September.1 To enclose you a short Resolution of Congress. To tell you that Colo. Livingston and your Brother James met in the Provost at New York. Livingston is with us. James is at large in New York. Your Family except one are alive and well. I am sorry to add that your Father is no more. I know how much you will feel on this Occasion and I know you too well to offer at Consolation— This must always come too soon or too late— Some Arrangements now before Congress will I think be agreable to you— You tell me but happy shall I be to see the day when I shall no more be plagued with his tricks— This Day will I think speedily arrive in a Manner agreable to all Parties.2

I will write you fully by the next Opportunity— Adieu Yours,

Gouv. Morris

DftS, NNC: Gouverneur Morris (EJ: 11388). Endorsed by Morris: “ . . . wrote pr. same offg a Billet to / Carmichael.” Encoded in “Office of Finance Cipher Number 1” (WE006). See “John Jay’s Use of Codes and Ciphers” (editorial note) on pp. 10–11.

2Morris wrongly encoded the last four letters of the word tricks, a word he picked up from JJ’s letter to him of 28 Sept. 1781, above, referring to the behavior of Carmichael. A week after Morris wrote JJ, Carmichael, at RRL’s nomination, was chosen by Congress to serve as BF’s secretary in Paris, an appointment revoked on 10 July. RDC description begins Francis Wharton, ed., The Revolutionary Diplomatic Correspondence of the United States (6 vols.; Washington, D.C., 1889) description ends , 5: 402; JCC description begins Worthington C. Ford et al., eds., Journals of the Continental Congress, 1774–1789 (34 vols.; Washington, D.C., 1904–37) description ends , 22: 258, 307, 380.
