To James Madison from James Monroe, 9 April 1816

From James Monroe

monday april 9. 1816 1

Col: Hawkins, will accept the offer as of agent, for the boundary under Porter, and there is reason to think that they are on a very good footing. His name is “Samuel.” He had better be sent in to day, and it will be fortunate if he & Col: Austin go together.

Consuls, I. C. Barnett for Paris of Jersey

Septimius Tyler of Connecticut for Bayonne.

Joseph Ficklin, Kentucky, for St Bartholomews.

Auldjo2—Cowes or Southhampton—I will send his other name, & look at mr Adams’s note respecting him

J.M.

RC (DLC: Rives Collection, Madison Papers). Docketed by JM, probably at a later date, “April 1815 or 16.”

1Monroe dated his note incorrectly; 9 Apr. 1816 was a Tuesday. JM sent in the nominations of Austin and Hawkins on 8 Apr. The other nominations, except that of Tyler, were sent in on 16 Apr. (Senate Exec. Proceedings, description begins Journal of the Executive Proceedings of the Senate of the United States of America (3 vols.; Washington, 1828). description ends 3:42, 43).

2“Thomas” inserted before “Auldjo” here in an unidentified hand.
