Philadelphia 6 July 1798
Dear Sir,
I am to receive tomorrow the Presidents letter to you, and leave this in the mail stage on monday, and continue with it to Alexandria. I shall not of course sleep much after getting into it till I see you. To facilitate this event, I have to request, if it can be done without inconvenience, that one of your servants may be at Alexandria to serve as a pilot for me to Mount Vernon.1 Adieu, most sincerely and affectionately

1. “Monday” was 9 July. McHenry arrived in Alexandria on 11 July, and on that day GW wrote to him from Mount Vernon: “Dear Sir My carriage is sent to Alexandria to bring you, and any companion you may have, to this place. I am always Yours, and affectionately Go. Washington” (copy [photostat], DLC: James McHenry Papers). James H. McHenry, who made the copy, wrote on it: “The original of the above, all in Washington’s Own hand, was given by me on 12th June ⟨1847⟩—to Lieutenant Wittick in the service of the Duke of Nassau.” Adolf (1817–1905) was the last duke of Nassau before the duchy became a part of Prussia in 1866. Lieutenant Wittick has not been identified.
