§ From Benjamin Lincoln. 5 September 1805, Boston. “Your request of the 10th. of July last has been attended to. The fine Muslins nor the Diaper could not be procured here & a Billit of the Sweet meats & Coffee is inclosed.”1

The enclosures (2 pp.) are Lincoln’s account with the United States for $213.40 for “the Cost of 7 Boxes of Confectionary and 1 bagg of Coffee… for the use of the Dey of Algiers,” and Elisha Tichnor & Co.’s 3 Aug. 1805 bill to Lincoln for the same amount for limes, oranges, pineapple, ginger, and pears, with Boston navy agent Samuel Brown’s 3 Sept. acknowledgment of receipt of the goods at the bottom, and Wagner’s 10 July 1806 note on the cover: “The within articles were procured by order of the Secretary of State and were shipped to Algiers on the public account. They ought to be charged to the Barbary appropriations”; countersigned by JM. The Treasury apparently neglected to pay Lincoln because he wrote again on 6 June 1806, resubmitting his account (DNA: RG 217, First Auditor’s Accounts, no. 18,370; 1 p.). Filed before Lincoln’s account is Account no. 18,369 (1 p.), Samuel Brown’s 21 Dec. 1805 account with the War Department for $222.27 for receiving and shipping ordinance and merchandise to Kennebec, Maine, to be forwarded to Algiers in accordance with a 9 Aug. 1805 request from Wagner. On the verso is Wagner’s 10 July 1806 note: “The within account is justly stated and may be paid out of the Barbary Appropriations”; countersigned by JM.
