Gentlemen,
You will be pleased to insert the enclosed advertisement in your paper for six weeks successively and charge the same in your annual account with the President of the United States—which account you will be good enough to present whenever it becomes due.1 I am, Gentlemen, Your most obedient Servant

William Goddard and James Angell (d. 1797) were the publishers of the Maryland Journal. For Goddard, see Mary Katherine Goddard to GW, 23 Dec. 1789, source note. Angell, the younger brother of Goddard’s wife Abigail, came to Baltimore from Providence in 1786, briefly operated a printing shop, and in August 1789 joined his brother-in-law as a partner in publishing the Maryland Journal.
1. The enclosure was an advertisement “of Royal Gift and the Knight of Malta standing at Mount Vernon this season.” On 8 April Lear wrote Goddard and Angell stating that he had sent them the advertisement on 6 Mar. “with a request that you would insert it in your paper—As I have not seen said advertisement published, I presume it did not get to your hands—and will be much obliged by your informing me if that was the case. The letter was franked by the President of the United States, and put into the Post-Office” (DLC:GW).
