1. Another writer added the phrase containing the date of Henry Gaither’s letter to Knox. Gaither, writing from Fort Fidius in Georgia, reported that residents of the Georgia frontier were fleeing their homes in fear of an Indian attack and that Georgia governor Edward Telfair was planning to gather militia for an expedition against the Indians. Despite providing the frontier residents with arms, Gaither wrote, “I am in a very disagreeable position here, occasioned by a suspicion, among the people, that I have power to call the militia into service, and afford them protection” (ASP, Indian Affairs, description begins Walter Lowrie et al., eds.
