To Thomas Jefferson from Henry Knox, 10 January 1789

From Henry Knox

New York, 10 Jan. 1789. Introduces bearer, Major Haskell: “His having served his Country through the late War,1 and his sustaining the character of a worthy citizen will I hope be received by you as an apology for the liberty I am taking.—I shall always be happy to receive any gentleman whom you may think proper to make known to me.”

RC (PHi); 1 p.; endorsed. Recorded in SJL as received 22 Feb. 1789. Dft (MHi: Knox Papers); 1 p.

Major Haskell: Elnathan Haskell of the 14th Massachusetts regiment. On 21 Dec. 1788 Knox had asked Washington for a certificate of service for Haskell, and Washington complied on 1 Jan. 1789 (Washington, Writings, ed. Fitzpatrick, xxx, 173).

1Dft has the following that Knox, despite Washington’s tribute to “a worthy man,” omitted from RC: “with an excellent reputation.”
